Start this class as a beginner and leave as a glass making addict. In this full-day workshop, you will learn each step of the glass blowing process from experienced and encouraging glassmaking experts in their inspiring studio!  With all of the materials, supplies and equipment needed to make your own glass provided in this workshop, learning to blow glass couldn’t be easier.  You will be part of a small group of 4-6 people with up to two tutors. Although you’re building your technical skills, there’s still room in this workshop for creativity- after all you're learning from top glass blowing artists! With all the colours you could dream of, get experimental and let your imagination take the reins to style your glass. In the beginning of this workshop, you will learn how to prepare different colour and texture techniques to apply to your glass pieces.  You will be able to make a bowl or paperweight and choose a final form from the following list of functional objects: - Drinking glass - Vase - Decorative bauble Master how to safely and confidently heat molten glass in a 1100 degree furnace which you will then gather and remove from the furnace using historical hand forged tools. Make sure you’re full of hot air for the next step! Once you have perfected removing your glass from the furnace, it’s time to learn how to sculpt and blow your own glass.  After a hard and hot graft it’s time to chill out! Cooling your glass is equally as fascinating and important as heating your glass, at the end of the workshop you will learn how to safely and properly cool your glass like a professional.  Many students learn best through a combination of demonstrations as well as a hands-on interactive teaching approach. This workshop is no exception! You will watch a demonstration then safely learn more about each step in the glass blowing process through having a go yourself. Not only will you get to take your three perfect and personalised glass pieces home at the end of the workshop, you will also be leaving with a full understanding of the glass making process and techniques as well as a burning hunger to create more gorgeous glass. What's included in the price? Although lunch in our full day course is included in the workshop, you’re welcome to bring along any food and drink with you or visit the on site cafe. Siddy works in the glorious Devon countryside just outside Cullompton. In 2012, she embarked on the mammoth task of replacing her old workshop and constructing a new eco house and studio. Still a “work in progress”, the house is now almost finished and Siddy has achieved her aim of providing the domestic heating and hot water from the waste heat generated by the glass making process. Siddy Langley's new eco-build nestling into the hillside The new eco house and studio nestling into the hillside Siddy’s inspiration has always come from nature and travel. Her camera is never far away, whether scuba diving in Sinai, dog walking in the woods or quietly sitting by her pond observing the dragonflies emerge. She is often to be found, working on the hot glass, with a photo for reference on the bench beside her. Traditionally, glass blowing has been regarded as a team activity and many glassmakers consider it impossible to work alone. Siddy, however, prefers to work “solo” and has devised ways of working which eliminate the need for a team or even an assistant. This makes for unique pieces of glass work.

Glass blowing courses: Learn to blow glass at Clavering Glassworks, Essex 1 DAY BEGINNER COURSE This one day lesson lasts for six hours and aims to provide an intensive introduction to this most exciting and challenging of craft disciplines. Throughout the lesson, you will learn to gather molten glass from the furnace at a temperature exceeding 1100 degrees and manipulate it with a range of traditional glassmaking tools. You will be taught to apply colour and pattern to the clear glass so that by the end of the lesson, you will have produced a number of items from vessels to paper weights of your own design to take home and treasure. KEY INFORMATION: This glassblowing lesson is aimed at complete beginners, so no previous experience is necessary. Small class sizes - maximum of three students to one instructor so you will get plenty of one-on one instruction. All safety equipment and materials are provided. Please wear sensible, comfortable clothes, preferably layers, so you can remove the outer layer if you get hot; and flat, sturdy shoes. Long hair should be tied back. Complimentary hot and cold drinks will be provided but feel free to bring along drinks, snacks and a packed lunch. Lunch is available at the Lodge nearby. Students for glassblowing courses must be over 18 years of age. Please note that glass vessels and other pieces made during the lesson need to cool slowly in the kiln, so these can be picked up two days later, or alternatively these can be posted for a charge.

Adam specialises in free blown glass. His vessels and sculptures are at once a celebration of the simplicity of pure form, and also an investigation into layering. His coloured patinas draw on painterly techniques and are predominately inspired by a love of nature, especially the play of light on water and the landscape. He is a consummate colourist, and the Impressionist painters -Turner, Whistler, Monet and others – have been a significant inspiration for his work. “I think of my work as a story of surface and form. Each blown glass artwork is a canvas, depicting landscape in a variety of abstracted ways; a shimmering moment of reflection, capturing river and sea, coastline, forest and desert, as light passes over and through. Glass contains its own dynamic of reflection and refraction, and balancing the relationship between form and surface is often challenging. I explore the organic form of each sculpture, celebrating the natural flow and force of molten glass, sometimes leaving behind traditional requirements for functionality. “Sometimes I start with a defined idea, but the intuitive way in which I work means that on occasions I’ll notice unexpected aspects of the developing form and how they relate to the palette I am using. It’s almost as if the evolving piece influences the way it turns out. People often say that glass has a life of its own and it is only when you actually make glass that you understand what this means. I’ve been developing a vocabulary of forms for some years, and these range from the early simple canvases to the more recent organic surfaces.” Adam’s work has been exhibited all over the world and can be found in numerous private collections from royalty to rock stars. Over the years, he has been commissioned to make work for the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Italy’s venerable Salviati glass studio, the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the UK’s National Art Collections Fund and The British Museum, among others. Adam’s work has been shown at the prestigious Sotheby’s Contemporary Decorative Arts exhibition in London, and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, in New York City. Adam is a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen (FSDC) and chair of their Selection Committee. He is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and Adam is also a member of many glass related societies and organisations, including the Contemporary Glass Society, and The Glass Society, which was formed from the merger of the Glass Association and the Glass Circle. Adam is also an active member of the Surrey Sculpture Society and the Surrey Guild of Craftsmen, as well as the Oxford Sculptors Group. Adam has exhibited and demonstrated at Art in Action, the annual arts and crafts event at Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire.

Based in the Welsh border town of Hay on Wye, we design, make and sell handmade glass, from our combined workshop and gallery. Hot Warm Cold The glass furnace is at the heart of the workshop. From here we gather Hot glass at temperatures of 1150 degrees and above, the glass is then shaped, blown and decorated by hand using many different techniques. The glass kilns allow us to use the Warm glass techniques of fusing and slumping. Temperatures of 750 degrees allow the glass to gently fuse and slump the glass. The Cold glass workshop is where we cut, grind, polish, engrave, drill, sandblast and ....... It is always the relationship between these processes, the material and the maker that shapes our glass designs.

After studying for two years at Barnfield colledge, Luton, I was accepted to study for a BA(honours) in Fine Art Ceramics and Glass at Buckingham shire University college, High Wycombe. I had the chance to experience a number of different mediums and I gradually became fascinated by the natural inherent organic textured qualities contained within clay. Half way through my second year I was introduced to the medium of glass, and glass blowing.The ethereal ghost like reflections cast by glass have influenced the work I have produced and produce today. I have always had an interest in things of a spiritual nature and have learn t to tune into the work I am producing at any one time, all else fades away into the background. As an artist it is not just about the end result but also the journey of creating something and learning to be in the present moment. When one achieves this, the finished result should carry a creative vibe that is able to lift the environment it is displayed in, through its vibrant colors and unusual vibrational bespoke presence.

Derek came to glass blowing after beginning his career in the film industry. He began using classic, English glassmaking techniques, as used by Whitefriars (James Powell & Sons), and from this grounding, he developed his craft by bringing in Venetian glass blowing techniques, which can create a range of effects, from light and airy glass to large sculptural pieces.
