‘Yes’ is to accept an ‘offer’. ‘And’ is to build on that offer. ‘Yes’ is to agree to be on a threshold. ‘And’ is to step over that threshold and offer, receive or discover new information. When we improvisers say ‘Yes, And’ to an offer, we allow for divergent (aka ‘blue-sky’) and creative thinking that follows the points of interest and engagement in a conversation, rather than following a pre-written agenda. It also makes sure – because we always accept the ‘Yes’ and specifically build on that ‘Yes’ with our ‘And’ – that everyone remains on track and on topic, without any wild or left-field or non-relevant additions. It also means there are no denials or blocks and, equally, there are no wildly disparate or ‘out there’ suggestions. So by creating an environment without blocks, wild tangents or stagnant thinking, ‘Yes, And’ keeps a group on topic, imaginative and in flow. Improvisers acknowledge that many people (ourselves included), prefer to say ‘No’ or ‘Yes, But’. Saying ‘No’ makes humans feel more in control and safe. “Shall we try this new thing?” “No!” (I’m busy, it’s untested, there’s good reasons not to – and essentially, it feels safer to say “No”). Saying ‘Yes, But’ makes humans feel more in control and safe – and sometimes a bit cleverer. “Shall we try this new thing?” “Yes, But… Before we do, I can see and will now list a number of clever reasons why it might not work.” (I’m in control of my fear and the possibility of the unknown. I sound open to it but essentially, I might not like it, so it feels safer to say “No”). However, we are programmed, as humans, to keep ourselves safe. So we can afford to go with the flow a bit more often and to work our ‘accept and build’ muscles. When we get in the habit of saying ‘Yes, And’, it guarantees more focused, meaningful conversations, clearer routes to creativity, better teamwork. It puts more options on the table. Even better, it encourages imaginative connections instead of competitions involving egos. It’s good for rapport. It means we think fast and shiny. It’s the clearest route to pure play. And play is key. Play where we imagine, invent, create, and solve. Play is how and where we humans human to our best potential.

London

Shakespeare's Kids was established by Sharon McNally (BA Hons) in 2012 following her studies in both Literature and Language. The objective initially was to explore ways in which quality literature, in particular Shakespeare, could be made more appealing and approachable to young children. Shakespeare's Kids have managed to create a unique experience where children as young as five can not only enjoy the stories of Shakespeare's plays, but actually become immersed in the the experience of becoming a literary character through costume, props, film and musical theatre. Drama, dance, music, film and costume were combined to encourage the children to create, perform and direct their version of Shakespeare's most popular works as well as their own unique stage productions. To date the project has produced short films adaptations of: - Macbeth - A Midsummer Night's Dream - Romeo & Juliet And their own unique historical short films including - The Revenge of Emmy Tot, Scotlands First Female Pirate - The World of William Shakespeare - The Battle of Bannockburn Filming has taken place across a range of locations from local graveyards, to historical sites such as Stirling Castl. From stately homes such as Chatelherault House Hamilton and Bannockburn House Stirling to Colzium Estate Kilsyth. The children have also ventured into stage productions and musical theatre creating their own plays based on literature & film's most classic heroes and villains and most recently they tackled a full scale Broadway Musical, Aladdin.

I believe we hold more potential than we can possibly imagine. I also believe many of us have had experiences that have left us feeling the opposite. We can learn to cope by closing up parts of our hearts for protection, staying small or rigid and we can find ourselves living lives that don’t reflect our true, juicy brilliance. We have a choice, always, about how we respond to what we come up against in life. We may not be conscious of it, but once we are, boy does the game shift gears. I spent most of my life juggling far too many balls, burning the candle at both ends and was petrified of being still. I didn’t know who I was when I wasn’t doing something. This exhausting cycle sprung from a lack of self-love and self-trust, which was a result of childhood abuse I had blocked out. Feeling poor all the time, (no matter how much money was in my bank account), perpetually single and like I was missing out on everything, I was no longer actively suicidal but sitting on a foundation of anger and frustration. Several major traumas in my life had not been dealt with and I was on a lot of medication of Narcolepsy. I was holding it together, but I was far from happy or healthy. I won’t share all the details here but am happy to bring them up when I hold space if they are relevant; suffice to say some unbearable life circumstances lead me to explore the spiritual path, and I began to realise there was a lot more to being alive than I was currently experiencing. For a while I couldn’t see it, but I had started to turn my life around from it’s very depths. It hasn’t been easy, and it definitely hasn’t been boring. I have travelled across rainforests, mountains, warehouses and the cosmos to find answers, but I have generally found more questions. Learning to surrender to what is mystic and trust in my own foundation of courage, compassion and wisdom have been of immeasurable benefit. I’ve connected to an inner power that I was unaware I had, it has guided me to share the tools, lessons and magic I have collected since I first began to heal from the inside out.
